I think history is definitely setting this up to be a Lidstrom vs. Harvey debate for 2nd best blueliner of all time, with Bourque a not too distant fourth.

And if Harvey is perceived as enigmatic because of Montreal fans' reaction, you bet your ass Lidstrom would be as well. Laughing

Bourque over Lidstrom for sure, Harvey I never saw so I can't comment.

Bourque played insane minutes and had little help. Lidstrom plays a lot too, but he's always had HOF help all around him. Doesn't make him less of a player to have good teammates, but Bourque's numbers were just as good and his game at both ends at the very very least on par with Lidstrom's...

Plus, he was an automatic 4 for 4 at the accurary shot contest Laughing

Lidstrom doesn't get near the love that other all-time greats get because he simply isn't flashy. Despite the fact he had HOF help all these years, just you wait until he's gone...something tells me Detroit will struggle a bit for a couple seasons thereafter, even with the enormous talent they will still have at that point.

I certainly want to say it's Ray over everyone but Orr, but I can't say that with 100% confidence. Gotta admit though the guy has the most accurate shot over anyone who's ever played, with maybe the exception of Brett Hull.

Tough to compare guys across eras, and sometimes it's tough to compare guys in the same era.

I'd give Bourque the nod over Lidstrom offensively, because for most of his career he had less talent around him than Lidstrom and was counted on to be the offensive catalyst for his team moreso than Lidstrom was in Detroit. Though Detroit had more go-to guys, it still started at the back end with Lidstrom. And even then, with Nick, it was always defense first that turned into offense. He wasn't as flashy as Bourque, but both were excellent with the puck in the opposition zone.

I'd give Nick the nod over Bourque defensively. He wasn't as physical, but Lidstrom is simply incredible with his positioning, stick and awareness. His defense still gets overlooked by people who look at point totals. Case in point was 03-04, his first full season paired with Schneider. He finished 22nd in D scoring and by his own admission it wasn't a typical season for him, but still being one of the best shut down guys in the game should have gotten him higher than 6th in Norris voting. Bourque was a higher-risk player than Lidstrom and made more mistakes because of it. Perhaps Lidstrom may have too in the same situation, who knows, but they were different players in different situations. And I didn't see Bourque too much in the 80's Smile

Laughing

It's unfair to Bourque, but besides him hoisting the Cup what is the most famous clip with Ray Bourque?

For me it would be when Iafrate whistled one just wide on Patty Roy in Game 7, it came back around, Bourque wound up and blew it by him, and then fist pumped his way out of the zone on his knee.

That or him sitting on the side boards, just gassed, as Neely got the ovation for 50 in 50...

But yeah... Bourque, Sweeney, Moog... I still remember watching that, and then just getting pelted with crap at school the next day Mad

I am so sick and tired of anyone; Sports Commentators, Fans, Bloggers, creating a "competition" between Athletes. There is NO competion on their careers. Each Athlete has his/her own era and situations. You cannot compare the performance of these Athletes to determine "who is best".

Ray Bourke's career was magnificent. The memories of his games will be with all hockey fans forever.

Nick Lidstrom is awsome. We fans watch him...well with awe.

I have never thought to compare Bourke with Nick... why?

I'm surprised at myself - I actually posted this politely.

Now - not so polite:
These Athletes do not care a fuck what you make up as a "comparison" between careers.

YOUR COMPARISONS ARE ARTIFICIAL.
