Screw you guys and your "X-boxes" and your "Play-stations" and your "wrapped music."

What were you all playing (gulp!) 20 years ago?

Remember how freaking psyched everyone was when Super Mario Bros. 3 came out and how it was, essentially, the pinnacle of awesomeness that raised the bar for all video games to come thereafter?

Remember those idiots who swore that certain teams in Blades of Steel were better than others, even though all that changed was their jersey color?

Remember how lame the Nintendo version of Double Dragon was compared to the arcade game? (Ditto, to an extent, for Punch-Out!).

The guys who came up with the brilliant concept for Dig Dug -- dig subterranean tunnels and inflate bad guys until they explode -- how many drugs were they on?

Up up down down left right left right B A start?

I was so excited Christmas '94. My mom finally caved (after months of pestering) and bought a Sega Genesis. We had, like, 4 games...crappy MLB game, some NHL game (maybe NHL 94? I was a born button-masher, so this didn't work too well for me, I just liked making super teams and completely stripping the other teams to garbage), Sonic 2, and ToeJam and Earl: Panic on Funkatron.

I should go to my parents' house and dig that thing up. I feel like jarring me some humans!

I came up with the idea of Tic Tac Toe on cave walls sometime during the last Ice Age; of course, it was well before Patent Rights, Copyright Laws, and Royalties were ever conceived. Dammit.

Leisure Suit Larry?

Super Mario 3 was the best. We had that, Zelda, Link(which was shit), Final Fantasy, Ice Hockey(better than Blades of Steel easily)...a bunch of others too. We had Super Sprint and Little League Baseball, which are easily two of the greatest games every made.

I had Toe Jam and Sonic too...and Street Fight 2 Special Champion Edition. Spending all of that time reading strategy guides for a game I didn't own finally paid off when I got it. And pays dividends to this day because I could probably still tell you how to do every single special move for all 12 characters. X-Men was a great game, extremely hard getting to the later levels in the game.

My brother beating Mario 1 without dying is still one of the greatest things I've ever seen.

I had Little League Baseball too -- it amazed me that every pro baseball game on Nintendo sucked (all suffered from the way-too-easy-to-get-on-base syndrome, among others), but Little League Baseball was essentially as realistic as it gets, if you ignore the fact they're supposed to be kids.

...and it was impossible to swing over or under the ball. Laughing

Bunting, check-swings, steals, everything. You could make some amazing diving and jumping plays and actually take away home runs jumping Laughing That game absolutely ruled.

Best hitter in the game? Albert on Canada. Dude was only a skill 3 but absolutely crushed the ball. Then Canada had a guy whose name I don't remember and then Fred. Murderer's Row.

Sid on California was the best pitcher in the game. You could do some weird shit with his pitches and he never seemed to run out of stamina.

Wang on Chinese Taipei was like Micah Owings or Babe Ruth(the 2 obviously aren't quite the same thing, but you get the idea Laughing). Skill 4 or 5 pitcher, and a ridiculous hitter too.

What's sad is that I actually know the "players" you're talking about. Laughing

Remember Hawaii? They were loaded with fat, slow kids who could crush the ball on every swing.

Now I even remember the game, and I would've only played it when I stayed over at my one friend's place. Laughing

Yup Laughing

I had some epic games with a buddy of mine in my second year of university. The game ends at the 18th innning regardless of the score Laughing

I could be wrong, but couldn't you pull your pitcher and then throw him back in later on? Laughing When I coached one year, I think you could actually to do that in real youth baseball Laughing

Yes you could -- and he would be as fresh as at the start of the game. I'm guessing it didn't work quite like that in the real-life variety. Laughing

Yeah he'd usually be fresh, but then he'd get tired faster than at the start of the game. Except for the Cali pitcher(pretty sure it's Sid). In a couple of those marathon games I had with my buddy, I'd throw him back in there and he'd go longer throwing faster. I think one of the 18-inning games he threw for 12-14 of the innings Shocked

I tell you what, I ain't never seen and you ain't never gonna see a pitcher as good as Sid. That kid was a legend.

Pffffffft...screw you trendy 8-bitters.

I had the most cutting-edge gaming computer out there--the Atari 1040 ST!!!! Great games, like Time Bandit, The Secret of Monkey Island, Bubble Bobble, The Adventure of Zak McCracken, and...and...aw whatever, I miss those days. Sad

Apple II/e was where it was at. And Ultima III: Exodus, was the RPG that all RPG's since have tried, but failed, to live up to.

I'll never forget the moment I, after endless hours of playing, had my ship sunk by a whirlpool, only to discover it was exactly what I needed to have happen to win the game. You brillliant, brilliant bastards. I was so confused... and I ended up being attacked by freaking wild horses. Horses. I figured out how to get out of there alive, but I needed to regroup. After the shock wore off... it finally donned on me what the fuck just happened.
