| Tanguay is supposedly unhappy playing for Keenan and is said to have recently missed an important team meeting. |

If Kovalev is in the last year of his deal, Calgary should do this...

Kovy has another year left on his deal. I think both contract terms are identical. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

| This would be better for Montreal than for us. Merely media speculation for now. We'll see how it goes. |

After doing a few days of research on the internet and watching several hours of tape, I have come to the conclusion that Kovalev can sometimes be a little bit streaky.
So maybe trading him while he is on a hot streak and looks like the second coming of Jagr might be a good idea, when you can get maximum return? Just a thought.
Also, I am officially shocked that Tanguay is not getting along with Keenan. _________________ (Working in a Call Centre) + (Being a Leafs Fan) = (One HUGE glutton for punishment)

As I mentioned on the old board, I really don't think this would be as horrible as some Flames supporters would make it sound.
Although I do have to question if Keenan's "motivation" would do anything more for Kovalev than it does for Tanguay?
Could also be a shrewd salary move to make room for Kipper... |

Sask says that the contracts are nearly identical, with the key feature of the extra year being the same. Calgary doesn't need that extra year. They need to find someone willing to take Tanguay's extra year and trading him for Kovalev will just stick then with that extra year. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Keenan and Kovalev have had each other's pleasure in the past. It's not like it was a tremendously successful relationship, but definitely his best Rangers stint was under Keenan in the '94 playoffs.
Tanguay says he has no problem with his role in Calgary... he's playing with Conroy and Iginla and has Kipper as a goalie, what's not to love? (paraphrasing Tanugay's comments) _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Well, according nhlpa . c o m:
Tanguay - $5.35M
Kovalev - $4.5M
That could definitely be enough to close the gap in Kipper negotiations. |

That's something, but I still think Calgary doesn't want to be stuck with the extra year with Kovalev. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Both contracts go through next season, so there isn't an extra year. Also, Tanguay makes $5.35M this year and next but his cap hit is only $5.25M, Kovalev's cap hit is the same as his $4.5M salary.
So effectively we'd be using Kovalev instead of Tanguay and save $750k in cap space. It's unlikely that Tanguay gets re-signed at the end of next season, so the age difference between the 2 players is pretty much not important. It's all about who can put up the best numbers between now and the end of next year.
Given the need to resign Phaneuf and Kiprusoff that space could be pretty valuable.
Is it a good business trade? Probably. Is it a good hockey trade? Maybe. No reason to think Kovalev won't be as good or better than Tanguay under Keenan. |

Sorry, I didn't mean to say that Kovalev has one extra year over Tanguay. I meant an extra year as in this year plus next year, which both of them have. I think if you trade Tanguay, you want to free up the as much dough as possible for next year, the "extra" year. Bad choice of wording maybe. The $750k is some coin towards Kipper and Phaneuf, but I think you want a greater difference than that. So you find a taker for Tanguay and get something in return that will cost you way less than Kovalev's $4.5 salary for next season. Get a return without next year on the books, or something that will have more than a $750k difference and less of a headache than Kovalev. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Currently, he's playing too well. You can't have him. _________________ The crowd once again showed its IQ level when it shouted ``U-S-A, U-S-A,'' during the fight. Their hero, Downie, is from Newmarket, Ont. |
