| Interesting, I think all four belong in the top 100 to play the game but that Messier would be the only one in the top 20. Thought he'd walk away with this but guess I'm wrong once again. |

If you're building a team, I've always believed that you start at the back and out. A franchise goalie or defenseman is huge. You can make the case for Stevens or big Al, but you've also got great forwards in Mess and Francis. Though for all of Mess' vaunted leadership, he couldn't lead his team out of a wet paper bag for the last few years of his career.
3 of the 4 have a Conny.
I don't know if I can choose. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

Even though I didn't like him, it'd be Mess. He got a bit too egotistical/soft in his latter years, but we're talking full career here. Guy was made to be a hockey player. There was no other logical career path for him.
Stevens would be 2nd on the list. Francis 3rd, Big Al 4th. Of course, I wouldn't complain about being "stuck with" any of them. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. Messier, and it's not even close. He's the only one who is one of the 10 best to ever play the game, and was arguably the greatest leader in sports. He could score, pass, hit, intimidate and lead.
Next would be Stevens. Obviously a great hitter and defender, people forget how good he used to be offensively as well. His hit on Kozlov in the '95 Stanley Cup set the tone for the entire series.
With all apologies to MacInnis or Francis, they would be quite far down when choosing players to build a team around. Francis had a great career, but he was always very good, seldom great. MacInnis was a obviously a great player as well, but I only worried about him on the PP. Maybe the number of first round exits he had (especially as the higher seeded team) would also cause me to drop him down on my list. |

I agree that Mess was all of those things. I think if you're taking a player at the start of his career, then it would be Mess.
However, if you're going to take MacInnis down because of his first round exits, how much should Mess be taken down because he didn't lead a team to the playoffs in his final 7 seasons? _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

6 Stanley Cups to 1.....that gives him the 'leeway' for how his career ended, at least IMO. With MacInnis it wasn't just the 1st round exits - many players go through stretches like these at some point in their career, but also the lack of consistent deep playoff pushes. And not to kid anyone too much, it's just part of the picture, as from what I saw Messier was simply a superior player. I don't want to make too much out of the playoff picture, it is a team game in the end. |
