Honestly, there's are penalties already for it. One is called "Unsportsmanlike Conduct". The other is "High Sticking". In the rulebook, high sticking makes no mention of contacting another player with the stick, that's just the general call. If a guy is waving around a stick dangerously like this, you can definitely call him for it and the NHL would support it.
The refs had the power, but refused to used it because, well, the actions of Avery confused them I suppose. Now the NHL will make sure they do use it in the future. _________________ "Oh my God. as stated in the game thread. The instigator makes this much more possible for a guy like Avery to pull. _________________ psssssssssssssshhh....bing bong ping bong bing bong...pssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh. |

Did you guys see when that other Ranger player in the crease skated over to Avery and told him to chill out? You know that maybe you are taking things too far when...
I pretty much agree with Sask, stupid as this was, neither Avery or anyone else is going to get away with it twice; the NHL will send a memo out and the next player to try it will be cooling their heels in the box for a 10 minute misconduct.
[EDIT]:Actually, Ron talked about the official rules for misconduct as basically involving "swearing, insulting, behaving inappropriately, or otherwise doing anything that seems like it might be an attempt to draw a penalty. Since Sean Avery does all four of these things before he gets out of bed in the morning, much less when he is in an NHL hockey rink and basically paid to do these things, I think an alert Ref could keep the little bastard in the box for the whole game!
[Announcer]And with that stoppage of play it looks like Sean Avery will come out of the box and back onto the ice after serving his ten minute miscounduct.
[Avery, as he is stepping back onto the ice, before the puck is even dropped]Holy ***** that was a long time to spend in that filthy mother******** penalty box. Hey brodeur! Speaking of dirty little boxes, I was paying a hooker to suck my mother******* **** last night at when she looked up I realized it was you mother ******* ex wife! That's right, you are mother******** divorsed you mother******** **** eating french peice of ****! And you wife is a **** ******** ****!
[Ref, blowing his whistle]Ten minute misconduct, Sean Avery
[Avery]Aw, **** that ****.
[Ref blows his whistle again]
I dunno, maybe that was funnier in my head... _________________ (Working in a Call Centre) + (Being a Leafs Fan) = (One HUGE glutton for punishment)

Scott Stevens or Ken Daneyko would have taken care of that very quickly, instigator or not, down 2 or not. The ref is lame for not calling anything - no balls.
Pretty funny though, I have to admit. I wonder if he thought that up before the game or if it just came to him. _________________

guys pull those swinging the stick moves in front of you all the time screwing around in pickup or practice, but to make the jump that it would be acceptable to do in game is something only Avery could do at that level. _________________ psssssssssssssshhh....bing bong ping bong bing bong...pssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh. |

As stupid and annoying as what Avery did is, Ryan Smyth pulls dirtier and more direct shit on a far more regular basis that goes uncalled. Just ask Marty Turco. _________________ Bring back the old OTP!

NEW YORK/TORONTO (April 14, 2008)—National Hockey League Senior Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell today issued the following advisory on the interpretation of Rule 75 -
Unsportsmanlike Conduct: “An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty (Rule 75) will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender’s face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play.” |

watching the clip today, it sure looks like Avery made contact with Brodeur's throat protector and cage at least once. Once was right before Marty tried to shove him away... _________________ I'm a Bruins fan - don't try to confuse me with the facts |

Man... if Pittsburgh and the Rags play each other next round that'll be a memorable matchup. _________________ "Oh my God. There she is. Lovely Sally Slater. I should speak to her. But what the hell can I say? Anything that doesn't mention that I masturbate over her memory is probably a good idea."

Go Phliers go.
I'd love to see Roberts beat the shit out of Sean the Yawn. _________________ The crowd once again showed its IQ level when it shouted ``U-S-A, U-S-A,'' during the fight. Their hero, Downie, is from Newmarket, Ont. |
