He's talking to all the players. Comments from them have been generally positive. Players have been thinking about better ways to market the game.
Seems to be neutral about the Ombudsman position. Thinks it's good that a high profile player like Lindros is in the position.
Spoke to the board of governors. Seemed to be a good deal of tension at the beginning but things loosened. Came away with a better understanding of the boards positions and concerns.
Says the players legally have little say on expansion. If the league were to expand, hopes the board will work with the players. Also, would like to see at least one of any new teams be placed in Canada.
Believes the instigator rule can be modified to allow more self-policing. Is concerned about dirty hits. Want's players to respect other players and avoid the long suspensions. Realizes there may be PR issues with this position.
Feels there are too many coaches behind the bench, all preaching defense first. Let the guys play.
Wants the players to be involved in any tests to changes to the game. Thinks there may be a tendency to tweak the game too often.
Goaltending equipment can be made smaller as long as it doesn't put the goalie at greater risk for injury. However, feels that goaltending equipment isn't the only reason for lower scoring. Better goalies, better coaching, and crappy ice conditions in some arenas.
Believes that visors should be worn by all players but doesn't seem too excited about madating the wearing of visors. Believes that most players will put them on themselves in the next two to three years.
Wants to market the game better. Get the game back on ESPN in the United States. Get the game out around the world, via playing outside North America, television, internet, and NHL products. Hire a sports marketing consultant to put together a strategy to promote the game. Work on those media outlets (such as LA - my comment) that are pulling back on coverage.
Feels the drug testing program is adequate but hasn't had time to really study it.
Doesn't want another lockout...

| But the players won’t be the party to pick that fight. We are very mindful of the fact that another labor interruption in this sport would be extremely harmful, and I intend to do everything in my power to avoid that happening. That said, my entire professional career has been spent as a trial lawyer, as an advocate, as an adversary; if the NHL wants to pick a fight, then frankly, that’s what I do best. |
